For those who don’t know, I got my first gray hair when I was 15. My father had salt-n-pepper hair when he was 17, and of the 3 children, I was the one who got the curse of premature gray. I also found out my mom’s father was premature gray as well. So I got the genes from both sides of the family. My siblings seemed to have been spared so far, though Vicky’s is becoming more and more gray in recent years (she says, but I haven’t seen any evidence).
It wouldn’t be that big of a deal, but I was also cursed with sensitive skin. Any random thing can set me off into a full-body rash. Over the years, I’ve been reacting more and more to hair dye. My head will get numb, I’ll get weird lumps in my neck and head, and it would itch and itch and burn and burn. Not fun. So I wouldn’t touch up my roots like a normal human being. The doctor advised taking a benadryl before dying my hair, and that has helped some, but then I have to sleep for 3-5 hours afterwards.
Back in 2005ish, I decided to go blonde. Clint likes it, and I like it, but I have really been missing the red. I liked myself better with dark hair. So, when the hair salon got too expensive for my taste, I started wondering what I should do. It’s been months of “do I dye it, or do I let it go gray and natural.” and “if I do dye it, do I stay blonde or go red? Do I do it myself or go to a salon? If I do it myself, do I get a store-bought color, or do I get henna?”
Well, after much hemming and hawing about what to do with my hair, I finally made a decision. With the help of the Simpsons, I decided to dye it (I can go gray in 10 or 20 years). I’ve been blonde for about 5 years now, so I’ll go henna for 5 years and see how it goes… then after that, I can cross that bridge when I come to it and decide if I want to go gray, blonde, or continue with henna..
It feels good to finally be decided. Oh, and Angel, Tabbitha and Parthena will be happy to know I threw out the mysterious box of open hennalucent that I had found in the back of my linen closet and had no recollection of buying. I got 4 samples from a recommended website of body-art quality henna so I will test the different colors out to see which one works best on my hair.
